Charles Arnold Pankey, 86, of Charleston, WV, passed away Monday, October 9, 2023, at his home. He was born August 2, 1937, in Kimberly, WV, and was the son of the late Benjamin F. Pankey and Henrietta M. Floyd.
Charles grew up in Kimberly and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Kimberly. He was a graduate of Simmons High School in Fayette County, where he was a star athlete. Upon graduating high school, Charles entered the United States Air Force. He was stationed at the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, ME, and served in Morocco.
Upon Charles’ honorable discharge, he moved to Charleston, WV, and attended WV State College. He held various jobs throughout his career and retired from the State of WV Employment Security Division.
Charles took pride in serving for several years as a planning committee member of the Simmons High School Reunion. He was known for being a colorful storyteller and having a dry sense of humor. Charles’ favorite pastimes were listening to music, tracing his family history, tuning into CNN, reading, and entertaining family. He loved his family and his family loved him!
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, son, Charles Juan Pankey, siblings, Benjamin Pankey, Joseph Pankey, Larry Pankey, and Raymond Pankey, and grandmother, Macie Floyd and uncle, Charlie Floyd, Sr., who played a significant role in his upbringing.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Dreama Pankey, daughters, Deborah Pankey-Mebane (Charles), Zoe Pankey Spratley (Michael), Annette Pankey (Rosiland Krumm), Celestine Pankey-Sanders, Anita Pankey, Tuesdy Berry, Nefertiti James, and Renee James, sons, Don Pankey, Benjamin Wayne Pankey, Anthony Darnell Pankey, and Kenya Pankey, and siblings, Walter Kenneth Pankey, Sandra Pankey Wallace (Stanley), and Edward Pankey and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
