Emma Jean Carter,76, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018. She was born to Edward “Doc” Burrell and Katherine Gladys Tyler, December 13, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Edward “Doc” Burrell and Katherine Gladys Tyler, her brother, Robert Burrell, her husband, Harry Carter, step children Judy and Kevin Carter and her grandson Ryan Carter.
Emma loved spending time with family and friends. She was there when needed and generous to a fault, often giving more than she could afford. She grew up in Charleston, WV, attending Garnet High School before graduating from the newly desegregated Charleston High School.
Emma was a member of Riverview Baptist Church and Rehoboth Cathedral of Christ. She continued to keep her faith close to heart throughout her life.
Emma found great joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren. Although she lived in various places throughout her life, she always called Charleston her home. She is certainly at peace knowing that she is back home at last, to rest with those she deeply loved.
She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Carter and Crystal Gregory and her step sons, Craig and Derrick Carter. Emma also leaves behind her grandchildren, Latasha Carroll, Craig Carter, Derrika Kirkwood, Melia Carter, Crystal Carter, Dene Carter, Jamal Carter, Jurnee and Zechariah Dyess and Morgan Gregory, four great-grandchildren and many caring relatives and friends. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her throughout her life and especially during the last month. Flowers may be sent to Grace Bible Church.
