Levonia Maxine Jones, 99, of Charleston, WV, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2021. She was born March 25, 1922, in Prudence, WV, to Thomas Pannell and Annie Moon.
Levonia was also affectionally called Miss Sis and Nanaw. She was married to Edmund Jones, Sr., and two children were born to this union. Levonia retired after working at the state Capitol for 41 years. At retirement, she was one of the last elevator operators in Charleston. Levonia loved playing bingo, tonk, and she had a passion for sewing, usually making all the clothing for the children on holidays who lived in Washington Manor. She also loved to cook and helped cook at Shiloh Baptist Church for the community. Levonia was a former member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and was a current member of First Baptist Church, both of Charleston.
Levonia was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack Johnson, Jessie Pannell, and Thomas Mack Pannell, and sisters, Jalina Moon and Mary Jones.
Levonia is survived by her son, Edmund Jones, Jr., (Betty), Charlotte, NC, daughter, Joan Witten, Charleston, WV, twenty-one grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three great-great grand-children, one great great-great grandchild, and first cousin, Mack Moon, Beckley, WV.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 9, 2021, 12:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 432 Shrewsbury St., Charleston. Visitation is 11:00 a.m. Entombment at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Callender Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
