This is the story of William “Billy” Frazier Harmon, Jr. Billy was a wonderful man that was loved, is missed and will always be cherished. Our “Papa”, as he was called by his grandchildren, was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Billy, born November 17, 1937, was the third child of Frazier and Leola Harmon. He was born in Glen White, WV, and moved to Charleston and eventually Rand, where he lived most of his adult life and made many lifelong friends. On July 9, 1960, he married Alma Jean Grant of Boomer, WV. Billy graduated from Garnet High School and joined the US Air Force. Following an 8-year stint in the military, he was employed by American Electric Power Company for over 25 years. Billy was also employed with the City of Charleston, working at the Charleston City Center for more than 25 years.
Billy loved sports and played basketball at Garnet High School as well as during his time in the military. He also loved attending sporting events and was a big supporter of Dupont and Riverside High School athletics. He was a season ticket holder for the WVU Mountaineers, supporting both the football and basketball programs. Billy loved to play cards, specifically pinochle. Many of his closest friendships were cultivated at weekly pinochle games.
Billy’s grandsons were his heart and joy. Time spent at Papa’s house was very special for Miles and Mason. Watching his grandsons playing basketball and soccer were a thrill for Billy.
Billy was a man of faith and was an active member of Levi First Missionary Baptist Church for over 64 years. He served as a trustee, usher, and financial clerk. Billy was also a member of the kitchen and transportation Committees.
